How it works

Plasma in, organism-level answer out

01

cfDNA extraction

Extraction optimized for recovery of short-fragment, low-abundance cell-free DNA from plasma.

02

PCR Amplification

Amplifies pathogen-specific regions for every panel target in a single reaction.

03

Exonuclease digestion

Selective digestion removes one DNA strand, leaving probe-ready single-stranded DNA.

04

GMR detection

ssDNA binds its pathogen-specific probe on the multi-sensor array for magnetic readout.

Biosensor Technology

Giant Magnetoresistance (GMR)

2007 Nobel Prize-Winning Technology

GMR leverages a quantum mechanical effect which can produce a measurable change in electrical resistance. This innovative structure combines a free layer of ferromagnetic material and a fixed layer of non-magnetic conductive material. The free layer is influenced by magnetic nanoparticles which induce a measurable change in resistance.

Zepto's GMR biosensor: magnetic nanoparticles linked by streptavidin and biotin to target cell-free DNA captured on probes at the Zepto bio-surface, above the free and fixed magnetic layers. Streptavidin Magnetic Nanoparticles Biotin Target Probes Zepto Bio-Surface Free Layer Fixed Layer

The Problem

6.5 Million
Deaths attributed to IFIs
each year worldwide
6.5 Million deaths / year
  • Fungal infections often go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, leading to delayed treatment and increased mortality.
  • Despite their severity, fungal diseases receive limited global attention and funding compared to other infectious diseases.
  • Improved awareness, rapid diagnostics, and access to antifungal treatments are essential to reducing the global burden of these life-threatening infections.
$6.7 Billion
In direct medical costs
are associated with IFIs in the U.S.
$6.7 Billion in U.S. costs
  • Fungal infections disproportionately impact vulnerable populations, such as immunocompromised patients, leading to higher treatment complexity and cost.
  • Many of these infections are difficult to diagnose early, resulting in disease progression that requires more aggressive and expensive interventions.
~20 Million
People at high risk for IFIs
in the U.S. alone
~20 Million at high risk
  • Immunocompromised individuals are more likely to develop invasive fungal diseases that can be life-threatening if not diagnosed and treated promptly.
  • Invasive fungal infections in these patients are associated with high mortality rates, often exceeding 50% when not promptly treated. Despite these dangers, awareness remains low, contributing to delayed diagnosis.

The Solution

>95%

Sensitivity

Zepto's technology leverages GMR to achieve an astonishing molecular sensitivity of over 95%.

<90 min

Turnaround Time

That same high sensitivity is delivered with a turnaround time of under 90 minutes.

≥36

Multiplex

Zepto's innovations allow for 36-plex uninterfered multiplex molecular detection.
